It appears that a lot of viewers were disappointed with Mockingjay Part 1 because it had less action and more emotion, and resulted in the third book to be drawn out as a more financial gain for the studio. However, I enjoyed how Part 1 focused on the inner workings of Katniss’ mind and watching how she came to the conclusion of assassinating President Snow herself to be well rewarding. This also allowed for Part 2 to be packed and more focused on the action of the book. If we combine both movies one 4hr or 5hr movie and split it into a 2hr movie then you will find that the end result is far below satisfactory and lacking a great deal of detail.
One aspect of the movie that I found to be fantastic and heartbreaking, in a good way, and that is the explosion of Katniss’ emotions when the war is finally over. Someone once said: “We can only bottle up our emotions for so long. Some day that bottle will crack and what we have tried to keep in will pour out in tears.” I have shed a few tears during emotional scenes in movies but when Katniss’ finally cried after so long and for so many reasons - grief, relief, anger, confusion, etc. – I felt like it was real. She has had to be strong for so long and now in the privacy of home without anyone or anything watching she can finally just be Katniss, the girl from District 12 who volunteered to save her sister. This is why I believe having Jennifer Lawrence portray Katniss Everdeen is one of the biggest reasons why the Hunger Games franchise was amazing. The emotional intensity and growth that she has had to bring throughout all four films feel real and it is the performance that often gets overlooked. Now while she is one of the main factors as to why her character was great is because she had other characters to support her along the way. Julianne Moore plays President Coin who we are now starting to see what her true intentions for this revolution are and Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays the former Gamemaker Plutarch who shows that while he is a supporter of the rebellion and Katniss, he may not be as loyal to Coin as we might think. I believe that one of the most evolving male actors in the movie is Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Peeta has just been rescued from the Capitol where he was being tortured with Tracker-Jacker venom, using his memories against and ultimately turning friends into enemies and enemies into friends. Overall, I have read the Hunger Games Trilogy and I can easily say that this movie is a very satisfying conclusion. Mockingjay Part 2 picks up immediately after the Part 1 with Katniss Everdeen coming to the climaxing realization that the only way for her to end the war is if she assassinates President Snow herself. This ensemble of actors was superb and the characters could not have been played by anyone better. In the Hunger Games the seeds of revolution have been planted, in Catching Fire those seeds are being watered, in Mockingjay Part 1 we watched the seeds of revolution grow, and in Mockingjay Part 2 we prepare for a harvest.
“We all have one enemy, and that's Snow! He corrupts everyone and everything! He turns the best of us against each other. Stop killing for him! Tonight, turn your weapons to the Capitol! Turn your weapons to Snow!” - Katniss Everdeen
