Plot Summary
Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's (Henry Cavill) selfless act, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) enlists newfound ally Diana Prince to face an even greater threat. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to recruit a team to stand against this newly awakened enemy. Despite the formation of an unprecedented league of heroes -- Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash -- it may be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions. Hello, Movie Buffs!
Past DC films (except Wonder Woman, 2017), have been dark, uneven and incoherent. And with the DCEU films depending on this film's success, the studio couldn’t afford another Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) or Suicide Squad (2016). Also since many believed that Wonder Woman was just a one-hit-wonder, no one actually expected DC to recapture that magic. Fortunately, Justice League (2017) proved to be just what the studio needed; two hours of jam-packed fun, action, and entertainment. The proposed film has faced many obstacles on the way to the big screen ranging from script issues, a change of Director, and massive reshoots as a result of changing Directors. But despite the film’s few problems and contrary to critic bashing, Justice League turned out to be better than expected. Without spoiling anything let me just say that no trailer or TV spot can prepare you for this film, so be ready to have your mind blown. There are a lot of scenes that DC has thankfully kept under wraps this time around - about 80% of the film was kept out of the promos.
Visually, Justice League is beautifully shot, the editing is cohesive, and it’s fittingly dark for the story. Directors Zack Snyder (Man of Steel, 300) and Joss Whedon (Avengers, Toy Story) did a fantastic job; you can't tell which scene was shot by which director because the same tone is throughout the film. Writer and substitute Director Joss Whedon handled the rewrites for the film beautifully and the pacing moves steadily. The script is lightened by quirky humor and amusing jokes, and the characters are portrayed pretty well; considering this ensemble cast of characters both new and old. There are only a few issues that I have with this film. First, the CGI failed to reach its full potential – especially in a lot of the fighting scenes, with the villain, and with his minions. Secondly, the music score (Danny Elfman) was underwhelming and forgettable. Next, while the action was well played out, there were times when it felt more like a predictable video game. And finally, some of the character development felt a bit rushed at times. This is mainly with Aquaman (Jason Momoa), the Flash (Ezra Miller), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) – as well as the villain, who was not very menacing (Ciaran Hinds) - but hopefully they will be more developed in their solo films and in Justice League Part 2 (TBA).
Overall, DC's Justice League (2017) is fun and entertaining film that comes off as being a bit cheesy at times but you can’t really blame DC considering that they’ve had a hard time generating successful films. Warner Brother’s studio and DC not only delivered but they left the audience wanting more. A big plus with the film is that around 80% of the film was not even hinted at in the trailers and TV spots. I highly recommend this film to everyone, whether you’re a DC fan or a Marvel fan.
NOTE: There are two bonus scenes that offer some interesting insight into future films.
