Hello, Movie Buffs!
Unknown (2011) is a great action thriller with a surprising plot point starring Liam Neeson, January Jones, and Diane Kruger. Despite there being a few flaws the story is intriguing, the main mystery is solved nicely, and the film ends well; there is an explanation for everything. Many viewers have compared this film to Neeson’s 2008 film Taken. Both films have a similar concept; the main character goes on a fast-paced journey to retrieve something special; in this case his memories. The difference between the two films is that Unknown has more suspense and mystery, whereas Taken is more hardcore action. Like Neeson’s character the audience is confused at first we believe its one thing that happened but with each new discovery, we learn that not everything is at it seems. Unlike most thrillers, it takes viewers at least halfway through the film to figure everything out. Personally, I found this to be the best part.
Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows, Run All Night) is a skilled director as he has done an amazing job at creating the right mood and telling the story in a way that allows the actors to perform realistically. The actors are satisfactory in their roles. Liam Neeson (Commuter) is turning out to be quiet the action-thriller star and who better could have played this character than him. For 59 years old then, now 65 years old, Neeson is surprisingly youthful and his chemistry with Diane Kruger (National Treasure) is convincing despite the slightly big age gap. Like Kruger January Jones (X-Men: First Class) and Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon) are also great as the supporting cast and fill the roles well. The action scenes are equally matched by the quiet drama scenes which are not usually seen in thrillers. Is this the most brilliant film, no but it very entertaining to watch.
Overall, Unknown (2011) is a thrilling piece of entertainment with believable characters, a great story filled with surprising twists, and is helmed by skilled director Jaume Collet-Serra. For some reason or another, Unknown has remained in the shadow of the Taken series, I personally believe that Unknown offers more twist and unpredictable moments than Taken. The ending is a bit predictable but still offers a surprise at the end. In all, if you enjoyed the Taken series and have yet to see this film then I highly recommend that you see this one.
"I didn't forget everything. I remember how to kill you, asshole."
