Hello, Movie Buffs!
A Wrinkle in Time is a 2003 Disney TV movie based off the first book, of the same name, in the by Madeline L'Engle and directed by John Kent Harrison (Anne of Green Gables, 2016). This was one film I missed watching as a child, nor have I read the book, but after recently watching the film I found it to be enjoyable and as classic as The NeverEnding Story series (1984, 1990, and 1994). The characters were interesting. Katie Stuart (The 100 as Monroe), David Dorfman (Drillbit Taylor), and Gregory Smith (The Patriot) are charming as the three main kids Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin. Alfre Woodard (12 Years a Slave), Alison Elliot (Wyatt Earp), and Kate Nelligan (Wolf) were perfect as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which.
A Wrinkle in Time is a story about modern science involving a traveling phenomenon known as the tesseract with Christian allegories of faith and love. The story’s message is beautiful and believable; a family’s bond of love is the strongest power we have inside us. The only issue I have with the film is with the special effects. Although this film came out in 2003 and it’s a TV movie, I was a bit disappointed with the CGI. Now, it didn’t have to be like CGI today but it could have been better. However, the music score by Jeff Danna, Patric Caird, and Shawn Pierce was memorable and the tesseract sequences make up for some of the CGI flaws.
Overall, A Wrinkle in Time (2003) was great for a TV movie. There were a few flaws with the special effects but the story, characters, and music make up for. The story’s message about the power of love is beautiful and believable. I can’t wait to see how this year’s version of the film will be and how much will change in comparison to this film.
