Hello, Movie Buffs!
Video game to film adaptations have been known to have minor success despite a large fan base but recently, in this year alone, two video games have been adapted to film with better success than others. Perhaps this is the start of a new era of video game based films.
Now Rampage (2018) is loosely based on the classic 1986 arcade game of the same name and contains a simple story with characters that are not too complex. I’ve never played the game but I read up on it and from what I found is that the game is vastly different from the film. In the game, players would take control people that could turn into one of three creatures George (the ape), Ralph (the wolf), and Lizzie (another character) and go on a rampage through various cities. So while some game fans may not like the film for its vast difference, director Brad Peyton (San Andreas) has created a wild film that is big, loud, and delivers exactly what the trailers promised.
The action is insane, every moment faced with the genetically enhanced creatures is thrilling and intense, with the final half hour being the most intense part of the whole. As expected with any Dwayne Johnson (Skyscraper) film the humor will leave you chuckling non-stop, with the comedy coming primarily from Johnson and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Walking Dead). Their dialogue together is sharp and well-timed. The special effects are comprised of smooth and realistic CGI that uses some originality for the makeup of the three creatures that pays homage to the sheer power of these beasts. The special effects team also delivered in regards to the massive fight that takes place in downtown Chicago. They used pyrotechnics and visual effects to craft the big fight and it was impressive. And the cinematography (Jaron Presant ) was well executed.
In a film about giant creatures rampaging around downtown Chicago, the performances of the humans are pretty solid. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson delivers his standard hero performance but his chemistry with the ape George (Jason LilesThe Clinic) is something I haven’t seen from him yet. Naomie Harris (Collateral Beauty) is great at expressing fear for the end of the world and her chemistry with Johnson is good but beyond that, she was a more minor character. Malin Akerman (Billions, 27 Dresses) has mastered the vicious corporate tyrant with the ice-cold stare of a perturbed woman but she kind of flops towards the very end. Her companion (brother? husband?) played by Jake Lacy (Miss Sloane) is great as the cheesy villainous man-child from the typical corporation who creates deadly experiments for their own gain. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is charming as Agent Russell, the sarcastic and modern-day cowboy agent whose mannerism and wide smile bring a comedic spark to the film.

Overall, Rampage (2018) is an entertaining film that is loosely based on the 1986 arcade game, of the same name. The story is a bit cheesy at times but the overall plot concept has everything you could ever want in film about three giant creatures/monsters. The action is intense, the humor is good, and the special effects are impressive. The characters are great, Dwayne Johnson and Jeffrey Dean Morgan deliver the better performances, while the rest of the cast perform supporting roles effectively. While it is not a cinematic masterpiece, it defiantly delivers everything it set out to do. I recommend seeing this film whilst in theaters and for ages 13+ due to some suggestive content/language and violence.

"Of course the wolf can fly."
- Davis Okoye

Hello, Movie Buffs!
The original Planet of the Apes came out in 1968 and it is one cinema’s greatest sci-fi classics. It’s relevant, especially for the late sixties as it raises concern for issues like race relations, animal rights, the fear of nuclear war, and the relationship between religion and science. It’s never easy to remake a classic with big shoes to fill because the stakes will be even higher. The biggest risk is that the remake will be unfavorably compared to the original. Therefore it was a brave move for director Tim Burton to try and remake such a classic film. While Tim Burton has made some pretty classic films in the past, Beetlejuice (1988), Edward Scissorhands (1990), and Sleepy Hollow (19999), when I first saw that Burton was the director for Planet of the Apes (2001) I could scarcely believe it and it’s not in a good way. Clearly, he should have stayed away from the Planet of the Apes (POTA) series entirely.

Hello, Movie Buffs!
Director J. Lee Thompson and writer Paul Dehn return to Battle For The Planet Of The Apes (1973), the 5th and final film of the original Planet of the Apes (POTA) series. Every film following the original first film – by director Franklin J. Schaffner and writers Michael Wilson and Rod Serling – has suffered in some way or another but I do not believe that Battle is the worst in the series. In my opinion Beneath is my least favorite film, Escape and Conquest are my top favorites, while Battle and POTA fall somewhere in the middle. It’s obvious that this film’s low budget made the costumes and set designs look cheap, and the story a bit thin but that does not mean that it should be easily dismissed. Despite a few flaws Battle has great character development and there are plenty of dramatic moments to go around.

Hello, Movie Buffs!
Producer Arthur P. Jacobs (Planet of the Apes) recruited writer Paul Dehn (Goldfinger) with a brief telegram: “Apes exist. Sequel required” and immediately Dehn started writing the script for what would be Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), the 3rd film in the series. Again the director changed, this time with Don Taylor (Song of the Thin Man) at the helm and because of a small budget of $2.5 million the production schedule had to be followed to a-T. The film came to the big screen less than a year after its predecessor and not only did it do well at the box office it was also well received by critics; at least enough to where the studio requested a 4th film.

Hello, Movie Buffs!
Planet of the Apes has been one of my favorite series since I first saw it when I was a little girl, and my father and I binged watched a TV marathon of the series. The first film was released in 1968, just a few months before 2001 A Space Odyssey, and made a huge impact on the style of modern-day sci-fi films. Personally, Planet of the Apes stands on its own, as a unique film that pushed the boundaries of our imagination and raises questions about today’s society without letting such question get in the way for the drama and action. Over the last 50 years, Planet of the Apes has attained classic sci-fi film status and is without a doubt a must watch for any movie guru.

Hello, Movie Buffs!
Writer & Director Cameron Crowe (Jerry McGuire) made more than a dozen films in the early 80’s and while his films have evolved over time, they still maintain his unique style - consistent, open, sensitive and quirky. With exception of Vanilla Sky (2001) a fantasy/mystery film and musical documentary Pearl Jam Twenty (2011), most of Crowe’s films have been comedies, each with a unique dosage of drama and romance. In the 80’s his films involved funny coming of age stories to would remain classics for decades to come: like Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and Say Anything (1989). In the 90’s Crowe started to create films that focused more on the concept of family, like Singles (1992) and Jerry Maguire (1996). This trend is also continued in Almost Famous (2000), We Bought a Zoo (2011), and again in this film Aloha (2015). There was a change in the family film, starting with Jerry Maguire, where the story starts focusing on a central character’s journey to redemption for past mistakes and/or sorting out what really matters to them. And yet through all these changes and evolutions to his style, Cameron Crowe remains remarkably consistent with strong character development and quirky dialog.

Now I must first point out that I am a huge history buff so I have a bigger inclination towards liking this film, especially since it was done very well. When it comes to telling the story of someone as well-known as Winston Churchill during World War 2, being exciting and historically accurate is not easy. And yet this film somehow goes beyond expectations. Director Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice; Anna Karenina) has an eye for creating captivating films with just the right tone and setting, and in his latest endeavor, Darkest Hour (2017) we see the same craftsmanship. Darkest Hour is riveting account of one of the most important moments of World War 2.

Since the 70’s Steven Spielberg has given us some of the most engaging films of all time for fans both young and old. But what I enjoy most about Spielberg’s work is his ability to jump between genres. He can make serious academy award winning dramas like Saving Private Ryan (1998), War Horse (2011), and Lincoln (2012) one minute. And then he can turn around and do classic childhood films like Hook (1991), Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park. And now with Ready Player One (2018) Spielberg has once again demonstrated that he’s still got the magic touch and knows how to connect a film with the audience both young and old.

I have never seen the original 1982 TRON film by Steven Lisberger and I have only ever heard of the film on a few occasions. Obviously, enough people believe that one must watch the original before watching this latest addition as it is the sequel to a nearly 30-year sci-fi cult classic. However, after seeing the previews for TRON: Legacy (2010), which were visually stunning, I decided to see this film without first seeing the original film. Now Disney took a risk in continuing this series by introducing a first-time-filmmaker Joseph Kosinski (Only the Brave) and re-imagining the story in a way that caters to the original fanbase whilst acquiring new ones.

Hello, Movie Buffs!
Directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix's Daredevil), starring a horde of characters – including John Boyega, Cailee Spaeny, Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, and Burn GormanPacific Rim: Uprising (2018) is an entertaining and adequate sequel to the 2013 film Pacific Rim directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Shape of Water). Now while I prefer the original one more, I still enjoyed Uprising to an extent and I am eagerly looking forward to more sequel films.
The film takes place 10 years after the first film and primarily follows Stacker Pentecost’s (Idris Elba) son, Jake, a once-promising cadet who was kicked out of the academy must now return and help train a new team of Jaeger cadets to stop a new threat. This plot is pretty similar to the last film but there are some differences in between. There is a surprising plot twist you probably didn’t see coming as well as a nice mix of light humor and drama. The action sequences are big, loud, and exciting. And while the first film had more Jaeger vs. Kaiju fight scenes, there is an interesting battle against a rogue Jaeger that proves to be better than expected.  The visual effects are spectacular and further enhance the action sequences. Compared to the last film and through creative designing the new Jaegers have received a complete upgrade, each with their unique line of weaponry.
The cast is pretty great overall. John Boyega's (SW: Last Jedi) carries the film between action scenes with a great deal of charisma Cailee Spaeny plays a convincing 14-15-year-old in her first performance debut, Scott Eastwood's (Fate of the Furious) character is a bit predictable but like his father Clint he provides some great moments of clarity, and it was great to see Jing Tian (The Great Wall) in another movie so soon. I am glad that Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, and Burn Gorman reprised their roles from the first film but I was a little disappointed with their lack of screen time and the rushed synopsis of what they’ve been doing the past 10 years. I think part of the reason is that I was hoping Charlie Hunnam would provide a small cameo of Raleigh Beckett, whose status is unknown but I highly doubt we’ve seen the last of him. The only other Issue with the cast is the severe lack of character development with the supporting cast, mainly the other cadets. Considering their screen time I expected at least a better introduction to their characters.

Overall, Pacific Rim: Uprising is an entertaining film with great action, spectacular visual effects, and a fittingly well-rounded cast. Guillermo del Toro created something new and fresh with the first film, so obviously, this one had a lot to live up to. And while it was not better than the first film, neither is it worse, rather both are pretty equal. Uprising is a bit of an improvement in the area of visual effects and design but it does lack a certain aspect of reverence for its inspiration. This is partly due to an inexperienced and relatively new director but the only way to get better is to keep trying and learning from your mistakes. So keep up the good work Steven S. DeKnight. Now if you were expecting a rehash of the first film then you will be sadly mistake but if you like Power Ranger meets Godzilla and great visual effects then this film is for you.
