Hello, Movie Buffs!
Marvel’s The Avengers (2012) is a fantastic ending to Marvels’ Phase One1 as well as an amazing superhero, action film. The film is based off the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, is directed by Joss Whedon, and features a star-studded cast – Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Stellan Skarsgård, and Samuel L. Jackson – portraying some of our favorite MCU characters.
How do you make a film that takes fully developed characters from other films and combines them into on film whilst delivering a meaningful story with fun and witty dialogue? Well, director Whedon (Avengers: Age of Ultron) did a spectacular job in bringing this story to life on the big screen through his direction and co-writing with Zak Penn (Ready Player One). Avengers, like most MCU films, is a film worthy of all the hype it’s received. Just by watching the film you can see that Whedon did his research and cares deeply for said material. There’s a reason such a film has not been made before. Making a film with a large group of diverse characters can be challenging because the audience needs to be able to connect with each character individually and each character has to bring something new to the table. This story has been building up for years. The action is well choreographed, the dialogue is full of humor, and there is just enough drama to cut through all the jokes and wit. The stakes are high and the interaction between the characters never feels forced or awkward. The special effects are mind-blowing and blend with the action quite well.
Without a doubt, the most impressive aspect of Avengers is that they have managed to take a horde of characters and give each one their own chance to shine. If you have seen all the previous Marvel films before this one then you would have been introduced to each of the characters. However, what this film manages to do is that they are able to introduce each of the characters in a new light, we get to see a deeper side to them that we did not get to see in their solo films. This is in part because the characters work together brilliantly and the tension between the characters is palpable. Characters like Thor, Iron Man, and the Hulk have big egos and are not used to playing by the rules, while Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Captain America play by the rules a bit too much. All these characters are thrown together beautifully as it forces each of the characters to push past their boundaries and be a better person. The rule breakers learn that you’re stronger if you work together and follow most rules. And the goody-goody’s learn that sometimes you have to break the rules in order to save those you care about.
The actors' performances are captivating and there are moments where we get to see past their strong exterior. Robert Downey Jr. had a lot of funny moments and hilarious dialogues as Tony Stark (Iron Man). Chris Evans perfectly portrays the out of time, old soul, and patriotic Steve Rogers (Captain America). Chris Hemsworth is hysterical as the big brute and Norse god Thor with uncharted powers (watch Thor: Ragnarok). Jeremy Renner is cool as Hawkeye, a modern-day Robin Hood with bows and arrows. Scarlett Johansson was fantastic as Black Widow and her budding relationship with Hulk is great to see. I have always been a big fan of Mark Ruffalo (13 Going on 30) and he is way better than Edward Norton as Hulk and his portrayal of Bruce Banner was believable and filled with conviction for the beast he is. The rest of the actors - Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, Stellan Skarsgård as Thor’s old friend Selvig, Cobie Smulders as Agent Hill, and Tom Hiddleston as villain Loki – all did great.
Overall, Marvel’s Avengers (2012) is a visual delight, character filled extravaganza, and is a worthy end to Marvel’s Phase One. Director Joss Whedon did a spectacular job in bringing this story to life on the big screen through his direction and co-writing with Zak Penn (Ready Player One). Just by watching the film you can see that Whedon did his research and cares deeply for said material. Avengers is the best and biggest film of 2012, prepare yourself for an epic adventure. I highly recommend this film to any superhero or Marvel fan.
