Review
Hello, Movie Buffs!
I would like to start by saying that I am too young to remember the original 1965-1968 TV series, so this review is strictly based on the film with only some minor comparisons to the recent Netflix TV series.
Lost in Space is one of the best sci-fi stories of all time, and while this 1998 film is not perfect by any means it is still entertaining for its time. There is a lot to like about this film. It’s a sci-fi film with impressive special effects for the 90’s, exciting action sequences, cool set designs, and good character performances. The story is simple enough for all ages but adds some serious drama for older audiences. Like the recent Netflix series, small details become important points later and a buildup of tension and suspense make certain revelations that much more daunting.
The acting was well done, and I like to see the similarities and differences between the characters in this film and the characters in the Netflix series. I am glad that the filmmakers had some of the original characters - June Lockhart (Mrs. Robinson), Marta Kristen (Judy Robinson), Angela Cartwright (Penny Robinson) and Mark Goddard (Don West) – make cameos and give some minor performances in the film. This demonstrates the respect that the filmmakers had for the fans of the original series and subsequently helped this adaptation.
Overall, Lost in Space (1998) is an entertaining adaption of a classic family adventure. The action sequences are great, the special effects are impressive, the performances are good, and the story was exciting and suspenseful for all ages. Whether you’re a fan of the original series or not I recommend that this film should definitely be given a shot. I am a huge fan of the recent Netflix series and I recommended that everyone give should give the new series a chance. As according to my father, the new series is way better than this film and the original series.
