Hello, Movie Buffs!
Jurassic Park III (2001) is a worthy successor in the franchise and while Steven Spielberg did not helm this installment, Joe Johnston (Jumanji) did a wonderful job. He pays homage to the original film while also adding his own touches and techniques in order to give the film a refreshing look. The film takes us back to Isla Sorna, Site B from The Lost World (1997), but it is clear from the beginning that this is a different film.

Jurassic Park III is a lot shorter than the first two films but it is only fitting that Johnston makes this his own film and still pay homage to the originals, rather than duplicating Spielberg’s work completely. I am sure many of you already know the story, whether it be from watching the film or even from seeing the trailers, so I feel no need to explain it. However, I will say this. The story is intelligent with violent and intense moments that are meant to entice a more mature audience (10+).  In addition, there are no useless love-story sub-plot or complex plot twists. No, this film is all action no romance film that is easy to follow. Despite being shorter, the film is fast-paced and doesn’t let up until the very end. A lot of action is packed within this film, and the advancements in computer effects and animatronics make the action sequences feel even more real. Director Johnston clearly demonstrates just what he can do with the technology he is given. The music soundtrack by Don Davis (The Matrix series) is superb in its own right but also contains some memorable themes from John Williams’ work in the first two films. Even if they decided to not make Jurassic World 1 (2015) & 2 (2018), Jurassic Park III would have still been an adequate finish to the series.
The characters are great. Sam Neil (The Commuter) returns as the beloved Dr. Grant, who is reluctant to speak about Jurassic Park let alone go back there. Laura Dern (The Last Jedi) also returns and does a great job as Ellie, who primarily only provides a few cameos throughout the film. And the rest of the cast – William H. Macy (Shameless), Tea Leoni (Fun with Dick and Jane; Madam Secretary), Trevor Morgan (Faith Under Fire), and Michael Jeter (Elmo’s World; The Green Mile) – are believable in the respective roles.

Overall, Jurassic Park III (2001) is a worthy addition to the series with an intelligent and thrilling story, a fast pace, realistic special effects, incredible action sequences, and a commendable music score. The characters fill their roles respectfully and the lack of a useless sub-plot is refreshing. Whether or not they had made Jurassic World 1 (2015) & 2 (2018), Jurassic Park III would have still been an adequate finish to the series. If you’re a fan of the series and/or you are looking for an easy to follow action film then I fully recommend this film, especially if you have already seen the first two.

"Reverse Darwinism - survival of the most idiotic."
- Dr. Grant
