Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in “Incredibles 2” – but this time Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is in the spotlight, leaving Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell) and Dash (voice of Huck Milner) to navigate the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life. It’s a tough transition for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack’s emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) must find a way to work together again—which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible. (1)
Review
Hello, Movie Buffs!
I greatly enjoyed the first Incredibles (2004) and anyone who watched it knew that a sequel was bound to happen, no matter how long it took. Now, after 14 years that sequel has been made a reality and despite the years that have passed the film is as charming and entertaining as the first one.
Incredibles 2 (2018) starts off immediately where the first film ended and the seamless transition between the films was absolutely flawless. The same issue about superheroes being illegal is used but this time it plays as the story’s main point. Although the script has matured from the average family superhero film. The film practically screams equality that men can do what women can do and vice-versa, and in a world that almost screams feminism, this is a refreshing taste. The story is reminiscent of Mr. Mom (1983) and A Saintly Switch (1999) with Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl switching roles. Both learn in their own way that the other may not always have the easy job. The film doesn’t waste any time in focusing on unnecessary scenes and while this film is longer than the first one, it never feels like its dragging. Once again, director and writer Brad Bird has given even better direction and has written an incredible story. This proves that those who have been demanding a sequel will not leave disappointed.
The visuals and special effects are excellent. The visuals had a modern 60’s vibe and some of the widescreen camera pans gave a realistic feel. The animation of the characters has improved a lot, sometimes I even forgot that this is an animation film. The sound effects were surrounding and the music score further enhances the 60’s vibe by giving of a fittingly retro feel. The action sequences have come along way and the film’s climax was thrilling to watch, and the comedy was even more humorous than the original.
The first film primarily focused on Mr. Incredible with the rest of the family acting as supporting roles but this film expands more on the film and gives each member equal screen time. Craig T. Nelson (Book Club) as Mr. Incredible, Holly Hunter (The Big Sick) as Elastifirl, Sarah Vowell (voiced Violet in Disney video games) as Violet, Samuel L. Jackson (Avengers - Infinity War) as Frozone, and Brad Bird as Edna Mode reprised their roles impressively well. Newcomer Huck Milner takes over for Spencer Fox (Kim Possible; Air Buddies) as Dash Parr and the similarities in their voice portrayal of the character is uncanny and almost never seen or in this case heard. The rest of the cast also do pretty well in the roles and while the villain, The Screensaver, is a bit corny overall it works as a good antagonist.
Overall, The Incredibles 2 (2018) starts off immediately after the first film and it is more than worth the 14-year wait. The story and technical aspects have matured a lot from the first film. The characters were all given appropriate with the Parr family getting a lot more screen time then they did in the first film. Aside from the Toy Story series, The Incredibles 2 is one of the best follow-up films from Pixar/Disney. This is most definitely a must-see film for the whole family, even the adults will love it.
