Hello, Movie Buffs!
Directed by Peter Berg (Deepwater Horizon and Patriots Day) and starring an amazing cast, Mile 22 (2018) is an adrenaline filled action thriller with quick editing cuts in every action scene that makes Jason Bourne and Michael Bay (13 Hours and Transformers The Last Knight) films look almost stagnant.

Mile 22 is the 4th collaboration between director Berg and Mark Wahlberg. While their previous works – Lone Survivor (2013), Deepwater Horizon (2016), and Patriots Day (2016) – carried an element of truth to the story, Mile 22 caters more towards audiences looking for their next thrill ride. And despite a short run time of only 1hr and 34 min, Mile 22, like the aforementioned film, builds a level of intensity that will leave your heart racing till the end. There are twists and turns at every corner and just when you think you everything, something new is revealed.
For the action sequences, director Berg and crew spare no expense. The gunfights are strategic with plenty of pyrotechnics, the chase scenes are jammed packed, and the close combat mixes of modern and traditional martial arts and takes a+dvantage of ordinary tools as weapons.
Some people have stated that the film could have done better with a more developed story and less incessant dialogue but overall the film does exactly what it said it would do: it entertains with intense action, unexpected thrills, and an ending that makes it worthwhile.
The film has a lot of characters and manages to utilize most of them effectively. Mark Wahlberg is great as James Silva, the fast-talking, cursing like a sailor, maniac team leader. Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead and BvS: Dawn of Justice) as Alice Kerr has a lot to do and does well with the hands-on action sequences, despite the guilt of being an absentee-mommy burdening her. Iko Uwais (Beyond Skyline) is great as Li Noor, who is part of the next generation of Jet Li’s or Jackie Chan’s in terms of delivering incredible fighting sequences. John Malkovich (Billions) is good as Overwatch’s control center leader, Bishop. And while him and his team – CL (Chae Rin Lee), Keith Arthur Bolden, Jenique Hendrix, Billy Smith, Myke Holmes, and Emily Skeggs– have very little screen time, the parts that we do them in are great to watch. The only issue that have with the characters is that Ronda Rousey’s (Furious 7 and WWE) character was underutilized despite this being her chance to action show some acting skills and Carlos Alban’s (H.O.M.E) character had some brief action scenes but could have been remembered as more than just the team’s main driver.

Overall, Mile 22 (2018) delivers with a suspenseful story and brutal and intense action sequences that spares no expense. There are twist and thrill at every turn, and when you think you know everything another surprise comes to light. The characters were good in their respective roles but there were some moments of relentless dialogue that turned out to be trivial at times and a few of the characters were underutilized.  However, the story’s ending makes it all worthwhile. Whether or not you’re a fan of Peter Berg or Mark Wahlberg, I suggest you watch this film as it does exactly what it set out to do: entertain.

"If you’re chaos I think I might be worse. I am a killer who looks like a hero."
- James Silva [to Axel]
