Hello, Movie Buffs!
Childhood games and traditions may seem silly to carry on into our adult life but with them comes a friendship that stands the tests of time. Directed by Jeff Tomsic (Idiotsitter and The Detour) and starring Hannibal Buress, Jon Hamm, Ed Helms, Jake Johnson and Jeremy Renner, Tag (2018) is based on the true story about a group of friends who have been playing the same game of Tag for over 30 years. Every year for the entire month of May they continued this time-honored childhood tradition and the goal is to not be the last person “it,” the only problem is that Jerry (Renner) has never been tagged. Ever. By sheer luck or chance, USA Today stumbled across the real-life game and then ESPN did a special segment about the group’s story, and now its been made into a motion picture.
The sight of grown men shocking bystanders by having such an abnormal devotion to a childhood game is hilarious. Tag is a silly comedy with vulgar verbal humor and physical humor, which the latter allows for some well-choreographed action sequences that only add to the humor. And despite being a comedy the plot is actually well developed with a good pace and has a message beyond all the jokes. Winning the game shouldn’t be everything and playing the game shouldn’t be the only reason or time you see your friends. We should cherish our friendships, especially those since childhood, and simply enjoy the game for what it is; a game, its meant to grow the friendship not be the only thing keeping it together.
All the cast are amazing, with great individual performances and even greater chemistry. Ed Helms (Vacation) is the ideal person to play Hoagie because he is able to play the everyday man teetering on the edge sanity. Jeremy Renner (Captain America: Civil War) is fun as the supremely self- confident Jerry. Jon Hamm (Beirut ) is great as Callahan, the successful businessman who is really a big kid at heart. Jake Johnson (New Girl and The Mummy) easily portrays Chilli, the goofy bum drug addict that has a softer, sweet side few rarely see. Hannibal Buress (The Secret Life of Pets 2) is funny as Sable, who is more paranoid than all his friends combined. Isla Fisher (Keeping up with the Joneses) is one of the most interesting and funniest characters as Hoagie's wife, Anna. As the film progress, she regularly ups her intensity from ever-so-slightly out of control to maniacal. The rest of the characters are great and help add to the film’s overall character.
Overall, Tag (2018) is an incredibly funny film based on an equally funny true story. The comedy is hilarious, although this is Rated R so most of the humor and jokes are vulgar or have sexual innuendos. The cast is great with their individual performances and they have great chemistry overall. If you are a fan of Game Night (2018) and Blockers (2018) then you will enjoy this film. But keep in mind that it is Rated R and not for the faint of heart.
"Never been tagged. Just sayin'."
