Review
Hello, Movie Buffs!
Directed by David Yates, written by Steve Kloves, and based on the bestselling YA series by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010) is the first part in the franchise’s two-part finale and its seventh installment. The Dark Lord (Ralph Fiennes) and his Death Eaters have taken control of the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts, and are rooting out any sympathizers of the Light in their search for Harry Potter. Meanwhile, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) are on a mission to find and destroy Lord Voldemort’s the Horcruxes – the pieces of his soul and the secret to his immortality. But without the guidance and protection of their professors and family, the trio must rely on one another more than ever as they prepare for the ultimate showdown between Light and Dark.
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Part 1 (2010) is the seventh installment in the franchise and covers half of the seventh book. Having only read the last book myself, I was delighted to hear that they would be splitting up the final book into two parts because it would have been the only way to do this film justice. The film begins where the last one left off and you can tell immediately that nothing is going to be the same; there is no room for kid stuff anymore. It is the darkest film in the franchise because of its detailed depiction of Harry’s hero moment during his darkest times. And it is also the brightest film in the franchise because of its detailed story, engaging emotion, and relatable performances. Each new installment has been better than the one before it and that is no exception here.
Director Yates has managed to stay very close to the book and yet still captures the grit and dark tone of the novel without focusing on all the angst that he did in The Order of the Phoenix (2007). Of course, some things were cut but I was surprised to find that most of the novel was left alone. This first half of the two-part final focuses on strategies, flashbacks, and repetitive hiding out and considering how much Yates had to throw in last-minute due to the absence characters in the earlier films, the 2 ½ hrs were put to good use. In addition, Yates’ direction of this film was incredible. He enhanced the visuals (Eduardo Serra) and costumes (Jany Temime), complimented the music score (Alexander Desplat), and improved the performances of the actors. And he did this all while keeping a great pace and adding hints of humor to cut through all the dark and grim storyline.
Overall, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010) is an entertaining and fantastic first part in the two-part finale of the Harry Potter franchise. Everything was great the story, the visuals, the costumes, the music, and especially the performances. I highly recommend this film to both new and old fans of the series.
