As Death Eaters wreak havoc in both Muggle and Wizard worlds, Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for students. Though Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) suspects there are new dangers lurking within the castle walls, Dumbledore is more intent than ever on preparing the young wizard for the final battle with Voldemort. Meanwhile, teenage hormones run rampant through Hogwarts, presenting a different sort of danger. Love may be in the air, but tragedy looms, and Hogwarts may never be the same again. (1)
Review
Hello, Movie Buffs!
Director David Yates and writer Steve Kloves (earlier Harry Potter films) return to helm the sixth film in the best-selling YA series by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009). Here, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and co. start their 6th year at Hogwarts, where dark secrets are waiting to be revealed. Harry is brought into a new light where he must choose between the being a normal teen or being the “Chosen One” and defeat Lord Voldemort. The Half-Blood Prince is a film filled with fantasy, action, adventure, and just a hint of romance and mystery that will take you on an adventure unlike any other.
This is David Yates’ second time helming a film from this franchise and it is impressive. The PG rating for this film was very generous because this film very dark with fire, blood, death, etc. Now I know that I said this for the last three films but it’s true. With each new installment, the dark tone goes to a whole new level. The opening sequence was excellent as it gives viewers an understanding of how strong the dark forces are and while the absence of Voldemort throughout the film sort of diminishes this effect, his evil presence is ever present in the back of everyone’s minds. The most powerful part of the film was the ending, which will leave you either in tears or opened mouth in disbelief. However, don’t expect this to be a carbon copy of the book.
Now I am not a huge book purist where the film has to be a 100% adaptation of the book but have certain standards. For instance, I have read The Divergent series, The Percy Jackson series, and The Mortal Instruments series and the films do not do the books justice. When I say that I mean they don’t carry the same heart or capture the overall plot that the book delivers. The books have a level of standard that the films did not amount to and it is obvious by their low movie ratings. Luckily that is not the case for this film.
Although I have only read the Deathly Hallows, I have gotten the opinions of friends who have read the series and from what I gathered the beginning and ending were changed, while the middle was snubbed. But despite all the changes, the film still manages to capture the overall plot of the book and the attention to detail throughout the film was more than satisfactory. The humor and wit is better than any of the other films and it works in making the film be more approachable to a wider audience.
Nicholas Hooper returns to do the film’s music score and it was nicely used throughout the film. The cinematography by Bruno Delbonnel and special effects were stunning and beautiful to behold. Te cast did great as always, while the new cast members – Jessie Cave (Lavender Brown), Jim Broadbent (Prof. Slughorn), and Freddie Stroma (Cormac McLaggen) – were great comedic additions to the film.
Overall, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) is an entertaining film filled with fantasy, action, adventure, and just a hint of romance and mystery. I highly recommend this film as worth watching.
"Seriously misunderstood creatures, spiders are. It's the eyes, I reckon, they unnerve some folk."

"Not to mention the pincers..."
