Plot Summary
Hidden within the messaging app of your smartphone is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), a multi-expressional emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Anna Faris). Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.

Hello, Movie Buffs!
Directed and written by Tony Leondis (Igor) alongside writers Eric Siegel (Men at Work), and Mike White (School of Rock TV and film), The Emoji Movie (2017) is a touching and heartwarming film that is beyond words.

The film completely commits to its Smartphone theme throughout the film. The visuals show beautifully imaginative renderings of Instagram, Spotify, The Cloud, Youtube, and more. The story and humor play into the film’s theme by using multiple pop culture, social media, and smartphone references. The characters are great as well and play into some of the trademarks of their characters. Surprising there is no bad language in this film, which is something I would not have been shocked to see here but was glad that it did not happen.

Overall, The Emoji Movie (2018) is an unpredictable, creative, humorous, and entertaining film that is great for the whole family. There are a ton of references to pop culture, apps, and general smartphone lingo, and the characters are incredible. If you’re looking for a great family film filled with laughs or you’re a fan of Wreck-It- Ralph and Inside Out then I recommend this film for you.

“My name is Gene and I’m supposed to be a Meh, you know, like, “Meh, who cares,”  but my problem is I have more than one emotion. I have so much more.”
- Gene
