Hello, Movie Buffs!
Written and directed by Leigh Whannell (Saw, Insidious: Chapter 3), Upgrade (2018) is a sci-fi B-film set in the near future and stars Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus, Spider-Man: Homecoming) as Grey Trace, a paralyzed man who uses an experimental computer chip, STEM, to give him special powers to avenge his wife's murder.
The term Sci-Fi is an unfortunately misunderstood genre. The idea of the genre is to evolve our everyday reality into a future that we can relate to. 2001: Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Star Wars, Star Trek, an Terminator are just some of the few films that have managed to fully encompass the requirements of a sci-fi film. However, Upgrade is not a Terminator type film. Rather it is a cautionary tale about how easily we let technology control our daily lives and how vulnerable technology is. We have become lazy by letting technology decide for us and as such we have to face the consequences of their failures. There is plenty of intrigue and action with an unexpected ending to make this film interesting enough to watch. The cast performances were also pretty good, especially Marshall-Green who delivers a solid performance as Grey Trace.
Overall, Upgrade (2018) might be a B-film, but the story is otherwise interesting and the action is decently intense. Some parts of the film seem to be inspired by other successful sci-fi films but at the same time, it is entirely its own film. Upgrade was one of those films that came out of nowhere for me, and after watching it I deem it to be worthy of recommendation.

"You now have full control again, Grey."
