Video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz must risk it all by traveling to the World Wide Web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope's video game, "Sugar Rush." In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet -- the netizens -- to help navigate their way, including an entrepreneur named Yesss, who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of trend-making site BuzzzTube. Hello, Movie Buffs!
Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) is a fun family film that continues the story of Ralph (John C. Reilly – Holmes & Watson) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman – Bob’s Burgers) 6 years after the events of Wreck-It Ralph (2012). With the installation of Wi-Fi into the arcade, a whole new world is open to Ralph and Vanellope, who set out on a new adventure to save the latter’s game. Directors Phil Johnston and Rich Moore return to help this sequel film, bringing back much of the same elements that made the first film a hit and introducing some new characters and references that are sure to bring about some nostalgia. There are a lot of pop culture references and Easter Eggs, some serve the film well while others are just there for entertainment.
The film delivered a good moral story about friendship and growth that was not as predictable as I thought it would be. However, the ending was somewhat questionable and there were a few subplots that seemed a bit pointless. The humor was pretty good relying mostly on clever references to the Internet that is also somewhat satire. It was interesting to see how the directors would play with the idea of what the Internet would look like inside and how we navigate it. The way we use search bars, see adds, play games, watch videos, shop, and more. Since the Internet was designed like a metropolis it was interesting to see how some big name websites – like eBay, Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Amazon – were designed to fit the website.
The cast performances were great. Returning cast members like John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer (The Middle) as Fix-It Felix, and Jane Lynch (Glee) as Calhoun gave good performances with Reilly and Silverman have effortless chemistry together. The new supporting cast is impressive: Gal Gadot (Wonder Women) as Shank, Taraji P. Henson (What Men Want) as Yesss, Alan Tudyk (Rogue One) as KnowsMore, Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2) as Double Dan. Ed O'Neill (Married With Children) as Mr. Litwak. Sean Giambrone (The Goldbergs) as The eboy. I was also very excited to see the Disney Princess and that most of the original voices – Irene Bedard as Pocahontas, Kristen Bell as Anna, Jodi Benson as Ariel, Auli'i Cravalho as Moana, Linda Larkin as Jasmine, Kelly Macdonald as Merida, Idina Menzel as Elsa, Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, Paige O'Hara as Belle, Anika Noni Rose as Tiana, and Ming-Na Wen as Mulan – reprised their roles along with newcomers Jennifer Hale as Cinderella, Kate Higgins as Aurora, and Pamela Ribon as Snow White .
Overall, Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) is a good family film that both adults and kids will enjoy. The story had a good moral concept was not as predictable as I expected, it did drag a few times and some subplots seemed pointless. I know some people who enjoyed the film and others who said it was boring, it just depends upon the person. The humor was on point and the visual design of the Internet as a metropolis was stunning. The many Easter Eggs and pop culture references were interesting some served a purpose while others were purely there for entertainment. The cast performance, both new and old, were great, especially the princesses who were my favorite part. I recommend this film.
