Hello, Movie Buffs!

     Directed and written by Abby Kohn (Never Been Kissed, How To Be Single) and Marc Silverstein (Never Been Kissed, How To Be Single), I Feel Pretty (2018) is a heartwarming and hilarious film that follows Renee Bennett (Amy Schumer), who struggles with insecurity and feeling inadequate on a daily basis. That is until one day after a nasty fall and a hit to the head she wakes up believing that she is the most beautiful and capable woman on the planet. With her newfound confidence, Renee is empowered to live her life fearlessly and flawlessly, and even allow herself to fall in love. But what will happen when she realizes that her appearance never changed?

     I Feel Pretty (2018) offers the most variety as it takes people on a fun and hilarious experience. In a way, this film reminds me of Never Been Kissed (1999) and it’s no wonder considering that the directors and writers of that film also helmed this film. Comedies and rom-coms take on many forms, sometimes their ridiculously clever with genuine humor while other times they're simple with over the top humor. But with I Feel Pretty, just like NBK, the humor was genuine and, in some case, very subtle. Shockingly, I missed out on seeing this with my girl-friends at the theaters because I thought it was going to be another try-to-hard comedy like Snatched (2017) but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. My friend and I laughed the entire way, and it did not feel forced or over the top nonsense.  

     Do not go in expecting this to be a Shallow Hal (2001) reboot because it is anything but that, it is its own film. This film takes a pretty average rom-com story and highlights the irrefutable truth that we live in a shallow society. That women struggle with comparison, judgment, insecurities and unhealthy perceptions because of our society. The story’s message was great as it focuses on teaching you to love and have confidence in yourself. To live life fearlessly and flawlessly, and to be the best you that you can be. The various stages of Renee’s confidence is an evolution, and I feel that everybody has the capacity to relate to this film on some level or another.

The entire cast gave solid and humorous performances with the most noteworthy being Amy Schumer (Trainwreck) as Renee and Michelle Williams (The Greatest Showman) as Avery LeClaire. I am not a big fan of Schumer, nor her style of humor. I didn’t care to see her in Trainwreck (2015) and I couldn’t even get past the 10 min mark of Snatched (2017) because the humor started to take a more awkward and vulgar route. However, in this film Schumer is perfect for the role of Renee, I couldn’t think of anybody else who could have done better. Williams was a secondary character as Renee’s new boss but her high, whimsical, and airy voice coupled with her graceful and almost innocent mannerism made her an interesting comical relief. To be honest she was almost unrecognizable.

     Overall, I Feel Pretty (2018) is an entertaining and smart rom-com that focuses on teaching the audience how to love themselves. If you break the story down it is pretty basic, but the lesson about embracing your inner beauty and being confident in yourself makes it stand out from all the rest. The entire cast gave solid and humorous performances with the most noteworthy being Amy Schumer and Michelle Williams. Do not expect this film to be a reboot of Never Been Kissed or Shallow Hall, but if you enjoyed those films then I have no doubt that you will enjoy this one as well.
