Hello, Movie Buffs!
Directed and written by Vince Marcello (Kissing Booth 2) and based on the bestselling novel by Beth Reekles, Kissing Booth (2018) follows Elle Evans (Joey King), a late-bloomer who's never-been-kissed, who decides to run a kissing booth with her best friend Lee (Joel Courtney) at their high school's Spring Carnival. Unexpectedly she finds herself locking lips with her secret crush and the ultimate bad boy, Noah Flynn (Jacob Elordi). Sparks fly but there is one little problem: Noah just so happens to be Lee’s brother and as a result is completely off limits according to the rules of their friendship pact. Ever since then Elle’s life has been turned upside down and now, she must make a choice: either follow the rules or follow her heart. So, what will she choose? Will she follow the rules of the friendship pact? Or will she follow her heart?
Kissing Booth (2018) is a highly entertaining teen rom-com and coming-of-age story by Netflix Studios. There is more to this film than just a good light-hearted rom-com, it's different. For starters, it puts a different spin on how it shows the aspects of being a teenager. This is a time in your life where everything is heightened and as a result, you tend to make a lot of mistakes and bad judgment calls, which is why this film is relatable to young audience members and how other teenagers could be experiencing the same thing. The portrayal of a complex and well-developed friendship between a boy and a girl that doesn’t become romantic is great. The friendship between Elle and Lee is endearing and very meaningful because it shows the ups and downs of friendship. The difficulties of being torn between love and loyalty, and how in some cases your decisions could either betray your best friend or your heart. Now, the romance between Elle and Noah was surprisingly well-developed for a teen romance. While there is an attraction between them, it wasn’t based solely on the attraction that has for each other. Elle and Noah have known each other since they were kids and while they are not the best of friends, they do have a unique friendship and audiences can see how that friendship grew into a genuine love for each other. This is what made me root their relationship from the start. There are a few issues, particularly in how Noah behaves towards Elle, however, the story was originally written by a 15-year-old girl on Wattpad which makes a huge impact on these issues.
The casting was solid, especially in regards to the three main characters, who all have great chemistry together. Joey King (Summer ’03, Kissing Booth 2) is adorable as Elle. She wasn't whinnying or over-dramatic, in fact, she is very level headed which works perfectly for this film as it is clearly about her and her choices. Joel Courtney (F*&% the Prom, Kissing Booth 2) is cute as Lee. It was nice to see strong chemistry between Lee and Elle without them becoming cliché best-friends-turned-lovers. Jacob Elordi (Kissing Booth 2, The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee) was great as Noah. He really knows how to pull off the bad-boy-whose-actually-sweet-in-private role, and his chemistry will Elle was incredible. The rest of the cast performed well, including the beautiful and timeless Molly Ringwald (Sixteen Candles).
Overall, The Kissing Booth (2018) is a highly entertaining teen com-rom and coming of age story that young audience members will love. This film has everything that you could ever want in rom-com: it’s funny, sweet, emotional, and romantic. It gives off a feel-good vibe that anyone could relate too. The story had a great message and touched on some interesting aspects of friendship, teen romance, love, and loyalty. The cast gave solid performances, especially the three main characters, and the chemistry between them was great and believable. If you enjoyed To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018) or your looking for a different kind of rom-com then this film is for you.
