Hello Movie Buffs!
In 1978 a race of aliens came to Earth asked the MIB to help hide their greatest treasure, “the Light”, the source of their power, but the MIB refuse and sent them on their way. Now in present-day Earth, 5 years after the events of the last film, alien Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle) seeks to possess “the Light” for herself and suspects that the MIB hid it in secret. Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) was the one who dealt with the aliens in 78, so it's up to him and Agent J (Will Smith) to save the world...again. However, there is just one problem, Agent K has been in retirement for the past 5 years and as a result, his memory about his time spent in the MIB has been wiped clean. Can Agent J return Agent K’s memory and follow the clues he left behind in time to save the world again? Or will they be too late?
Directed by Barry Sonnenfield (Men in Black: International), written by Robert Gordon (Wonder Park, Series of Unfortunate Events film) and Barry Fanaro (I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry), and based off the comics by Lowell Cunningham, Men in Black II (2002) is a fun and entertaining sci-fi film about conspiracy theories, aliens, and more. The film’s plot is good albeit a little smaller and nowhere near as engrossing as the first film, while the pace is quick yet easy to follow and the action is fantastic. However, the film does suffer from being a sequel because the story does contain a lot of the same context that we saw in the first film and doesn’t deliver them as effectively. Perhaps because we could easily anticipate what was going to happen. Rather than focus its time on creating and delivering something new, the film spends too much time trying to mimic what made the first film successful, not to mention the story concludes far too easily than before. All in all, the story is good and entertaining but there are a number of areas that needed to be improved upon in order to surpass the first film.
The highlight of the film is the acting. Will Smith (Aladdin) and Tommy Lee Jones (Ad Astra) are excellent as always but this time it felt like they grew more into their characters. Lara Flynn Boyle (Twin Peaks) is impressive as the film’s villain, Rosario Dawson (Alexander, Zombieland: Double Tap) was very good as Laura Vasquez, Johnny Knoxvill (Action Point) as scrad was good, and Patrick Warburton (Family Guy, Series of Unfortunate Events) was also good despite only being around for a little bit.
Overall, Men in Black II (2002) is a fun and entertaining sequel to the 1997 original. The film is good overall but it does fall prey to some of the same cliches that tends to entrap most comedy sequels. The humor was good but it felt a little forced at times and the story itself could have been more successful with some more plot twists and better build up. The cast performances were the highlight of the film, especially from Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. All in all, this was a good film and I do recommend it but I still prefer the original out of the two.
