Hello, Movie Buffs!
For thousands of years, humanity has believed that En Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac) is the first-ever mutant and an all-powerful one at that. In 3600 BCE during a sacred ceremony to prolong his life once again, En Sabah Nur becomes entombed alive and unaware as to the result of a coupe. Fast forward to 1983, things seem to go well for our beloved X-Men, who have built new lives for themselves after the events of the last film. That is until old ally and CIA agent Moira McTaggart (Rose Byrne) stumbles upon En Sabah Nur’s tomb and unknowingly awakens him. After spending thousands of years in a deep slumber and awakening to a completely different world, En Sabah Nur plans to reshape the world in his own image with the help of his Four Horsemen. With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, can the X-Men stop a seemingly all-powerful and immortal enemy before it’s too late? Or is the Apocalypse just an inevitable part of life?
Directed by Bryan Singer (Bohemian Rhapsody), screenplay by Simon Kinberg (Dark Phoenix), and based off the X-Men comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) is an action-packed, emotional, and dramatic film that continues along the same lines as the last two films. Director Singer did an incredible job with directing this film, not only did he pay homage to the comics but he also did so in a way that wouldn’t offend specific religious groups. The story packs in a lot of depth, action, humor, emotion, and drama but also manages to remain simple and straight to the point. The special effects and visuals are incredible and have greatly improved since the last film.
All the characters shine and come into their own. The returning characters - James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Evan Peters, Josh Helman, and Lucas Till - by giving the audience enough information to catch up with what has been going on recently but also keeps us hang till the end. Oscar Isaac (Operation Finale, Annihilation) stole the show with every scene he was in as Apocalypse/En Sabah Nur, he is by far my favorite X-Men villain to date. He provides an on-screen presence that is enhanced by the makeup and costume, not diminished by them. The sonorous effects of his voice add to the overall experience and elevate his character to menacing proportions. Although I really didn't think anyone could replace Famke Janssen, I was surprised to see Sophie Turner (GOT) make an excellent, possibly even better, Jean Grey. The rest of the new cast members - Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ben Hardy, Alexandra Shipp, Lana Condor, and Olivia Munn - gave incredible performances and I can’t wait to see if they will take part in future X-Men films. I already know a few of them will be seen in the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019).
Overall, X-Men: Apocalypse (2019) is an entertaining and worthy installment to the X-Men series. The story is simple and straight to the point but it also packs in a lot of depth, action, humor, emotion, and drama. The special effects and visuals are incredible and have greatly improved since the last film. The cast performances, both new and old, shine on their own and as a whole. All in all, I recommend this film to anyone who is a fan of the X-Men series, especially if they have plans to see Dark Phoenix (2019).
