Hello, Movie Buffs!
Following the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), the world is still grieving the loss of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Peter Parker (Tom Holland) seems to be struggling the most with the passing of his mentor. Nevertheless, he finds himself embarking of school summer trip across Europe where he plans to tell MJ (Zendaya) how he really feels about her. However, his plans and his trip are continually being hijacked by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who wants him to team up with Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) and take down elemental monster hell-bent on destroying Earth. Can Peter Park save the world and get the girl of his dreams? Is he the next Iron Man? Watch and find out.
Directed by Jon Watts (SM: Homecoming), written by Chriss McKenna (SM: Homecoming, Ant-Man and the Wasp) and Erik Sommers (SM: Homecoming, Ant-Man and the Wasp), and based on the comics by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) is a fantastic addition into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the quite possibly the perfect film to follow after Avengers: Endgame. Far From Home has a very different feel to it then Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and this is in part due to following after Endgame’s emotional and traumatic ending, which this film effectively reflects upon. In Endgame we get to see how the world is dealing with the aftermath of the Snap, but Far From Home shows us what it's like after the Blip - where those who disappeared in the snap come back - and how it affects different types of people. While half of the population has aged 5 years, the other half looks exactly the same as when they disappeared in the Snap. As a result, there is a lot of different emotions coming from both sides and as the audience, we get to experience the full force of Peter’s pain and the pain of those around him.
In addition to being the perfect film to follow Endgame, Far From Home also toes the line between being a rom-com and action-comedy quite well. The action scenes are bigger and better than they were in Homecoming, in fact, there were times when you weren't even sure if our hero would win or not. But the film’s main focus is not on world-saving action pieces, even though they do take up a good chunk of the film but rather the film focuses a good amount of time on the budding relationship between Peter and MJ. Despite being Spider-Man and having helped saved the world twice, it was interesting to see Peter agonize over a girl like any other average teenager because it reminds us that he is still just a boy who gets nervous about a girl. Also, the music by Michael Giacchino (Rogue One, War for Planet of the Apes) fits in perfectly with the context of each scene. All in all, the film’s storytelling engages the audience from beginning to end and the plot-twist maybe expected but is sure to blow people’s minds, especially those who don’t know anything about the MCU beyond what we have already seen from films. Keep in mind that there are 2 post-credit scenes, one is mind-blowing and crucial to future MCU films, while the other was interesting and slightly-comedic.
Now the cast performances were great all around. Tom Holland (Chaos Walking, The Current War) is my favorite Peter Parker/Spider-Man, he’s relatable in that he connects with the audience in a way that hasn’t been done for. He shows how he can be Spider-Man the superhero but he also adds in the element of teenage awkwardness that reminds us that he is still just Peter Parker the high school student, the neighborhood Spider-Man. Zendaya (The OA, Euphoria) did a great job in making MJ feel authentic, intelligent, likable, and quirky in a way that makes her force to be reckoned with and not just another piece of dumbed-down eye-candy that waits in the background. Jake Gyllenhaal (Stronger, Life) may not have been my first choice or even a choice at all to play Mysterio but after watching him here I have to say that he did a pretty good job. His performance was refreshing and different from all the other characters I have seen him play before so it was nice to see him do something different. The rest of the characters -  Jon Favreau (Chef, Endgame) as Happy, Samuel L. Jackson (Shaft) as Nick Fury, Marisa Tomei (My Friend Vinny) as Aunt May, Jacob Batalon (Every Day) as Ned, Tony Revolori (Table 19) as Flash, Angourie Rice (Every Day) as Betty, and Remy Hii (Crazy Rich Asians) as Brad - did great jobs in their respective roles and the chemistry between the characters was great as well.
Overall, Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) was the perfect film to follow after Avengers: Endgame (2019) and it was a fantastic addition to the MCU series. The story is a rom-com and an action-comedy combined with a few superhero elements to tie it all together. It was both funny and emotional, and could possibly be seen as a great way to help those still grieving over the emotionally climactic ending that was in Endgame. The cast performances were great, especially from Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jake Gyllenhaal, all of which proved to be perfect in their respective roles. I highly recommend that you watch this film, especially in IMAX, as you won’t be disappointed one bit. Also, make sure you stay for the two post-credit scenes because one of them is very crucial to the future of Spider-Man.
