Hello, Movie Buffs!
When a mild-mannered Uber driver named Stu (Kumail Nanjiani) picks up a new passenger named Victor (Dave Bautista), he is hoping that this ride will get him the five-stars he so desperately needs. But when Victor turns out to be a grizzled detective hot on the trail of a brutal and sadistic drug lord named Tedjo (Iko Uwais), Stu finds himself thrown into a distressing ordeal where he desperately tries to hold onto his wits, his life, and his five-star rating. Will Vic catch his suspect and keep his family safe in the process? Will Stu get his five-star rating and the girl of his dreams? Or better yet, will they survive the night?
Directed by Michael Dowse (Future Man) and written by Tripper Clancy (Hot Dog), Stuber (2019) is a major action-comedy fest that will leave you laughing until the very end. The film’s plot focuses on Victor’s obsessive manhunt of the cop-killer drug dealer and Stu dealing with the shock of witnessing murders at every turn. These two characters are polar opposites and the film’s plot takes advantage of that in a great way. The comedy is comprised of two different styles that work great together and the violence only adds to the film’s comedic nature. All in all, the story's premise was a bit strained but it does achieve what it set out to do and at the end delivers an entertaining and hilarious film to watch.
The cast performances were great. Dave Bautista (My Spy, Endgame) is a very underrated actor who showed that he has some great comedic talent in Guardians of the Galaxy and does it here again. His style of comedy is more yelling and direct line delivery with some drawn-out jokes that accompany his character’s nature. On the other hand, Kumail Najiani (Men in Black: International, The Big Sick) is all about the dry sarcasm and deadpan one-liners that capitalize on comedic timing for its delivery. Their chemistry together is great, especially since they both play characters that are the complete opposite of each other. The supporting cast performances were great in their respective roles as well.
Overall, Stuber (2019) is an entertaining film that is filled with great action, that is both cool and comedic, and comedy, which is comprised of two different styles that work great together. The story is simple doesn’t require much brainpower to follow, and the cast performances were both fitting and complimentary. If you have yet to see this film then I highly recommend that you check it out as soon as you can and I don’t think you will be disappointed. Be prepared to laugh yourself hoars. Keep in mind that this film is rated R so it does have some nudity, violence, and strong language.
