Hello, Movie Buffs!
Col. Trautman (Richard Crenna) travels to Thailand, hoping to convince veteran John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) to accompany him on a mission to help the Mujahideen rebels who are fighting a Soviet invasion in Afghanistan. But when a now Buddhist Rambo refuses, Trautman decides to do the mission alone. However, things quickly go belly up, resulting in Trautman being captured and tortured by the ruthless Russian Colonel Zaysen (Marc de Jonge). Hearing the news, Rambo allies himself with the Mujahideen and launches a rescue mission to rescue Trautman from Zaysen and possibly even put a stop to the invading Soviet forces in Afghanistan.
After firing Russell Mulcahy (Highlander) over creative differences, Stallone brought on the legendary second unit director Peter MacDonald - who is best known for his work on Guardian of the Galaxy, Wrath of the Titans, and even a few Harry Potter films - to helm this film. Written by Sylvester Stallone (Rambo: Last Blood) and Sheldon Lettich (Only the Strong, Max), Rambo 3 (1988) is an explosive and entertaining action film, and while it did not earn as much as Part II, it is quite possibly one of the biggest installments in the series. The music score by Jerry Goldsmith (Star Trek films, Congo) implements themes and action cues help to immerse the audience into the film. This is most definitely one of Goldsmith’s best work.
The acting is excellent. Sylvester Stallone is once again incredible as Rambo and the late Richard Crenna delivers a memorable performance as Col. Trautman, even more so considering that this is his last Rambo film. Marc de Jonge (Empire of the Sun) as Colonel Zaysen and Kurtwood Smith (Deep Impact, El Camino Christmas) were good in their respective performances, especially since the former is a well-respected French actor who plays a Russian Colonel.
Overall, Rambo III (1988) is an explosive and entertaining action film that is one of the best in the series. The music score will immerse You into the story until the very end and the cast performances are excellent. With this being Richard Crenna’s last Rambo film, it is nice that he had a more central role in the film rather than being some underused secondary character. All in all, this was a great film and I highly recommend that you check it out.
