Hello, Movie Buffs!
Henry Brogan (Will Smith) is an elite assassin and after completing his 72nd job he is ready to retire. However, his plans get turned upside down when he becomes the target of a mysterious operative who can predict his every move. To his horror, Henry soon learns that he is being hunted by a younger cloned version of himself, Junior. Now with the help of a few allies (Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Benedict Wong), Henry must find out why he is being hunted and by whom. Can he get Junior to see the truth before he makes the same mistakes Henry did? Or is he already past the point of no return?
Recently special effects technology such as CGI motion-capture performances seems to be at an all-time high. Here Gemini Man (2019) - directed by Ang Lee (Life of Pi, Billy Lynn’s Long Half-Time Walk) and written by David Benioff (Game of Thrones), Billy Ray (Overlord, Terminator:Dark Fate), and Darren Lemke (Shazam!) - utilizes computer-based de-aging technology to make Will Smith’s (Aladdin) character appear more than 25 years younger. In addition, Lee relies on even more CGI for the fight sequences between Smith and Smith but he also does an excellent job in quickly building towards Junior’s reveal by utilizing a first-person perspective and understanding that audiences came to see the action.
Aside from the action, the story also contains some interesting and complex themes that question morality and the concept of nature vs. nurture. It asks audiences what might one say to their younger self if given the opportunity. However, theses aspects mostly stay one dimensional and are never given the chance to go beyond that but if there is a sequel film, then perhaps these questions will be answered. In short, Gemini Man (2019) is an action thriller that delivers exciting action sequences, a good story, and incredible acting talent.
In an I Am Legend (2007) meets Six Degrees of Separation (1993), Will Smith is great in his performance as both Henry Brogan and his younger self Junior. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) hits it out of the part as DIA agent Dani Zakarweski. However, if they were going for a potential romance between her character and Smith’s then they missed their mark, but if it was introducing a much-needed friendship then it was great. Clive Owen (Anon, The informer) plays a forgettable cliché villain but Benedict Wong (Avengers: Endgame) arrives to supply his usual humorous line-readings and jovial nature that the film desperately needed. All in all, the cast did great.
Overall, Gemini Man is an action thriller that delivers exciting action sequences, a good story, and incredible acting talent. The plot was good but needed more in the emotional department and while the villain was forgettable, the rest of the cast proved to be able to hold their own and deliver good performances. All in all, I recommend this film as a great action film with great special effects that is worth watching.
